Buttonaid is an innovative medical device designed to streamline
the buttonhole method in hemodialysis. By assisting in the
precise creation of a fixed puncture pathway, Buttonaid reduces
the risk of mispuncture, allowing faster channel formation. This
ensures a safer, more comfortable experience for patients, while
reducing pain and stress. It also allows healthcare providers to
use blunt needles for future treatments, extending the life of
the AV fistula. Buttonaid offers a reliable solution for
long-term hemodialysis care.
End user testing
Buttonaid was originally conceptualized during a master thesis
project in collaboration with ZNA. The development followed a
user-centered approach, ensuring the product met the needs and
challenges of end users—nurses and healthcare providers. To
optimize the device extensive testing was conducted in
collaboration with Antwerp University Hospital (UZA), iterating
through multiple prototypes. This process involved closely
analyzing the action routines of healthcare professionals and
spending significant time in dialysis facilities. The insights
gained from these real-world environments have culminated in
Buttonaid's final, user-optimized design.
